The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
